Spenser's at it again. Hired by Loudon Tripp, a grieving Boston aristocrat who believes his late wife Olivia's brutal street slaying to be something other than random violence, Spenser immediately senses that Tripp's picture-perfect version of his family's life is false. The victim's reputation is just a bit too saintly, her house as lived in as a movie set, and her troubled children don't look much like the products of a happy home. As Spenser probes more deeply behind the grand illusions, he finds cardboard cutout people like the wealthy executive whose checks bounce, the ambiguous Olivia herself, who isn't all that dead, and false-fronted places like a sleepy Southern town that seethes with scandal.
